TENET, the 11th feature from prestige British filmmaker Christopher Nolan, stars John David Washington and Robert Pattinson and is a sci-fi adventure seemingly set in the not too distant future, where the cast must take advantage of new technology to prevent a worldwide catastrophe.
I've been a huge fan of Nolan's work ever since I first saw The Dark Knight, and would say he is my favourite director working today. His incredible track record set my expectations at the highest level, an anticipation level comparable to the release of a new Star Wars or Marvel feature, with good reason. Nolan himself labelled TENET as an 'event film' of that magnitude. However, these self-imposed expectations hindered my enjoyment of the film.
Saying this, I think TENET is a fantastic movie, beautifully made like all of Nolan's work prior. There just weren't enough surprises that would've taken this movie into the highest tier of Sci-Fi.
The standout positive from this movie is the visuals. Whether it's the beautiful IMAX sequences that make up an impressive amount of the film's runtime or the 'inverted' scenes, this film is jaw-dropping to watch from start to finish from a cinematography perspective. However, the same can be said for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker or The Lion King re-make, two examples of how great visuals is not enough, just one of many pieces needed to create a great film. TENET mostly has those pieces, a great musical score, and a great script.
Without spoiling the movie, the film is crafted in such a way that it reflects its premise. Our world, moving through time forwards and backwards simultaneously, infinitely intertwined and mutually dependant.
The originality of this premise is what makes the film shine, as I have never seen anything quite like TENET. It will be set side by side with Inception and Interstellar for obvious reasons, but other than the surface facts of 'Sci-Fi Nolan Film' it is vastly different. The concept Nolan plays with here is a complex one, far more so than Inception's in my opinion. Though he is aware of this and provides a bombardment of expositional dialogue throughout the first 90 minutes of the film, he also expects the audience to bear with him while he takes the time to set up the final act. Some aspects of the first and second acts have seemingly redundant scenes and caused the film to slow down in pace, but as the film progresses you begin to see why all these pieces are necessary to the narrative. Having seen the whole movie though, Nolan did a fine job of introducing a completely new concept and applying it all within the 150 runtime. I also feel the film will have considerable re-watch value, mandatory even.
Despite anything I say in this review, I will still be seeing this film multiple times during its theatrical run, simply to experience it how it should be, on the largest screen possible.
Another standout is the performances, across the board. Right from the opening scene, John David Washington is fantastic as 'the protagonist' and the audience within the movie, a Nolan trope. However, during expositional scenes, Washington can be compared to Ellen Page's role in Inception, a device to simply info-dump on the audience, especially in a scene involving Michael Caine.
Pattinson also sinks into his role, and now has hopefully proven himself to people that he is more than just the guy from Twilight. He displays his characters' wrestle with what he chooses to reveal to Washington's character and what is best kept a secret, but we learn nothing of his life before the action.
Another performance that can't be ignored is Kenneth Branagh as the film's villain. He gives a venomous performance and is a real threat as the stakes of his actions build and build.
Though the performances are good, an aspect of the film that's lacking is character development. Nolan's love of mystery here causes for an absence of emotional connection to the characters, excluding Elizabeth Debicki's character, who is involved in sub-plots that I won't get into.
The film's musical score is also electrifying. Right from the opening shot, you are thrown into the action with droning bass, punchy kicks and fast-paced high-hats, a rare occasion where I found myself actively listening to the score, as it adds so much to what's happening on screen. However, I found the sound mixing to be slightly jarring, as there were multiple times where dialogue was drowned by the score.
A returning trick of Nolan's is the two-legged final act that he regularly practices, similar to Interstellar, Dunkirk and Inception, where he culminates multiple plotlines to climax simultaneously. The technique is utilised well again in TENET. The final act is where this film really kicks into gear, and there is a clear point in this movie where the concept of inversion is fully embraced. My one major issue with the film is that this moment happens too late. The moment falls here because this is where it makes sense within the story, but just as a fan watching, I wanted more of what was promised in the trailers.
Overall, Tenet was a wonderfully crafted, original and a generally well-paced film, but just didn't surprise me enough personally for it to live up to my (admittedly large) expectations. The central concept of inversion has so much on-screen potential that I wanted to see more of in this film. It dips its toes into the paradox of time melting together from the future and the past, but there was potential for more. Once again without spoiling, the ending scene ties up this story nicely and leaves an opening for a sequel to explore deeper in the future. And if this were to happen, I will be there on opening day to watch it happen.
I will give Tenet an 8 out of 10 for entertainment, and an A for filmmaking in terms of direction, cinematography and production value.
